CHARACTER SIMILARITIES IN SECTION 2

Gene Rosellini relates to Chris in many ways. One of which is as a child and throughout college, Gene was a straight A student, and he was involved in all types of activities such as martial arts and yoga. Then when in college he started to realize that this pursuit of knowledge could be done without controlled school learning. For this very reason, he left the university and slowly started making his way up the coast through British Colombia and into the woods of Alaska. In a forest at the edge of town he devoted his life to his anthropological experiments. He told local news that he wanted to know if it was possible to live without technology. Besides the experiments, Rosellini’s life runs almost parallel with Chris’ in that he could not deal with the structure of society anymore, so he left and went to live of the environment without technology or human contact. Rosellini would, without reason, commit suicide in the same wood where he went to save himself from society.

Now the life of John Mallon Waterman is much more similar to Chris McCandless, but less known than that of Rosellini’s. John was the middle child of three sons who learned to rock climb from his multi-talented father at the age of thirteen. He loved running, working out, and climbing more than anything. He became the third youngest person to ever climb Mt. Mckinley at just 16 years old, and would continue to climb many mountains around the world. John was an odd man who was seen prancing around the base camp in a cape and Elton John glasses, and carried a cheap guitar so he could sing poorly made songs about his adventures. So far John compares to Chris by the fact that he and Chris both left society to live in the outdoors and just live life how they want without structure. The difference between the two is that John enjoyed human contacted and hated that his dad never visited, but Chris could care less about any human contact at all. After John learned to climb, a series of unfortunate events happened such as his best friend randomly disappearing, and eight of his friends either died on site or committed suicide. He was broke but managed to borrow some and then he ran for a couple of political positions such as the President of the United States. He then went to climb a few more mountains including the Denali. He then disappeared last being seen on April 1st 1981, then when his tracks were followed, there seemed to be no attempt to avoid hazards. The body was never found and he left a note that read “3-13-81 My last kiss 1:42 pm.”
